Flat Rate vs. Hourly Rate
Plumbers who charge hourly will charge a fixed amount for an hour of their time, plus the cost of materials used with a markup. Unfortunately, this incentivizes the plumber to work slowly (and earn more money).
According to HomeAdvisor, the hourly rate can vary from $60 to $270 CAD. Presumably this variance is due to unlicensed plumbers on the low end and companies that gouge their customers on the high end.

Some plumbing jobs are more complicated than others!
How to get the most for your money
- Deal with reputable companies – if a company has been around for a long time, you know they take care of their customers. Read their Google reviews and check their ratings.
- Get a price up front – if the plumber won’t give you a price, they should have specific reasons why the price might vary.
- Ask to see documentation – A professional plumbing company can easily provide you with proof of insurance, business license, journeyman tickets, and WCB coverage. It’s not that big of an ask.
If you follow these 3 simple steps, you’re much more likely to have a positive plumbing experience.
